Continuing Medical Education Requirments for D.O.'s

For D.O. Licensure Renewal, the Board requires a total of 32 CME hours.

  • 16 hours must be AOA Category 1A or 1B Credit (Osteopathic).

The Board may request documentation of entries at any time.

Per West Virginia Code §30-1-7a, “each person licensed to practice medicine and surgery as an osteopathic physician and surgeon or certified as an osteopathic physician assistant by the West Virginia Board of Osteopathic Medicine shall complete drug diversion training and best practice prescribing of controlled substances training, as the trainings are established by his or her respective licensing board…”

A three hour CME, course which has been approved by the WV Board of Osteopathic Medicine, must be completed by any licensee of the Board who prescribes, administers or dispenses a controlled substance, as that term is defined in section one hundred one, article one, chapter sixty-a of WV Code.   This will be required every two year licensing period, unless the licensee signs a board waiver indicating she/he has not administered, prescribed or dispensed a controlled substance during the last two year licensing period.

Remember, these must receive prior approval from the WV Board of Osteopathic Medicine to be accepted.  Check with the CME sponsor before registering to make sure it has been approved by the Board. Board Approved CME Programs can be found on our calendar.

YOUR LICENSE CANNOT BE RENEWED AFTER 2013 WITHOUT THIS COURSEWORK.
